Willemite (UV-active!); Franklin Furnace, Sussex Co., NJ, USA; unique piece
Willemite, UV-active from Franklin Furnace, Sussex Co., NJ, USA. One unique specimen, 28.45 kg.
This large unique specimen comes from the classic locality Franklin Furnace in New Jersey, USA, and shows impressive UV activity. Under shortwave UV light (SWUV), green fluorescent Willemite appears clearly in veins and patches across the light red matrix. Additional zones of red fluorescence may indicate the presence of other UV-reactive minerals such as Calcite or Hardystonite. This exact piece is ideal as an eye-catcher for exhibitions or as a centerpiece in a UV mineral collection.
Geology & Origin
Franklin Furnace is considered one of the most famous localities for fluorescent minerals worldwide. The region is known for the complex metamorphism of zinc-rich sedimentary rocks, which gave rise to many rare and UV-active minerals. Willemite commonly occurs here together with Franklinite, Calcite, and Zincite in striking assemblages. The characteristic fluorescent patterns from Franklin remain an international reference in UV mineralogy.
