Whitlockite crystals from the Tip Top Mine, South Dakota, USA, Gerd Tremmel collection – Scab as unique piece

This normal size specimen displays Whitlockit as abundant fine crystalline aggregates distributed across the matrix in layered and patchy zones. The crystals show characteristic light to intense pink and reddish-orange hues, forming dense, partly radiating coatings. In some areas, individual crystal forms are clearly recognizable, while other zones consist of compact aggregates. The overall appearance is vivid and well balanced, representing the typical crystal habit of this rare phosphate mineral very convincingly.

Geology & Origin

The Tip Top Mine in South Dakota is a well-known classic locality for secondary phosphate minerals occurring in pegmatitic veins. Whitlockit forms here as a late-stage mineral through complex alteration and transformation processes of phosphate-rich primary minerals. This specimen originates from the renowned Gerd Tremmel collection and illustrates the mineralogical diversity and quality of this internationally significant locality.
