Tsumcorite xls; Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia, 1st oxidation zone; Gerd Tremmel collection; 3 TN as unique piece
Tsumcorite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia, 1st oxidation zone, Gerd Tremmel collection – 3 micromount as unique piece
These three micromounts show Tsumcorite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine in the Otavi Mountains, Namibia, 1st oxidation zone, from the Gerd Tremmel collection. The crystals occur in small cavities within a dark gray to brownish matrix and display yellowish to honey colored tones. They are compact in development and form fine crystalline aggregates with a matte to slightly silky surface. In certain areas they stand out clearly from the surrounding rock and create distinct color accents within the structured ore matrix.
Geology & Origin
The Tsumeb Mine in Namibia is one of the world’s most significant polymetallic deposits and is especially renowned for its extraordinary diversity of secondary minerals. In the first oxidation zone, numerous arsenates formed through the weathering of primary sulfide ores under oxygen rich conditions. Tsumcorite developed as a secondary lead zinc arsenate within complex geochemical environments characterized by oxidation, remobilization, and reprecipitation processes. The deposit represents the type locality of the mineral and is internationally recognized for the quality of its crystal specimens.
