Topaz xls; Thomas Range, Utah, USA; Gerd Tremmel collection; 8 TN as unique piece
Topaz crystals from Thomas Range, Utah, USA, Gerd Tremmel collection – 8 micromount as unique piece
This selected group comprises eight Topaz crystals from the Thomas Range in Utah. The crystals display the typical clear to slightly champagne-colored tones of this locality and well-developed prismatic habits with distinct terminal faces. In some cases, fine rhyolite matrix coatings are preserved, emphasizing the natural character of the specimens. The crystals are clearly recognizable and show appealing transparency with sharp edges and faces.
The compact presentation as a micromount group makes this ensemble particularly attractive for systematic collectors and enthusiasts of classic U.S. localities. Specimens from the Thomas Range have been appreciated for decades and represent characteristic examples of topaz-bearing rhyolite occurrences in the western United States.
Geology & Origin
The Thomas Range in Utah is famous for its topaz-bearing rhyolites. The crystals formed in gas-rich cavities of silicic volcanic rocks, where fluorine-rich solutions favored the crystallization of Topaz. Within lithophysal cavities, often clear and well-formed individuals grew freely. The combination of volcanic activity, fluorine enrichment and relatively slow crystallization resulted in the transparent to honey-colored Topaz crystals typical of this region.
