Thomsonite crystals from the Bramburg Quarry, Göttingen, Germany – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This attractive small cabinet specimen features a cavity lined with Thomsonite within dark volcanic host rock. The vug contains numerous fine white to cream colored Thomsonite crystals forming radiating aggregates and delicate needle-like crystal sprays. The well visible crystallization contrasts beautifully with the surrounding matrix and gives the specimen both mineralogical and aesthetic appeal. Crystals are clearly recognizable and display the characteristic habit of this zeolite mineral.

Geology & Origin

Thomsonite belongs to the zeolite group and forms as a secondary mineral within cavities of volcanic rocks. Circulating mineral rich solutions fill fractures and gas cavities where the characteristic radiating crystal aggregates develop. Bramburg Quarry near Göttingen is known among collectors for a variety of zeolite occurrences associated with the volcanic rocks of the region. Such vug specimens with well developed Thomsonite crystals are sought after by collectors and provide an excellent example of hydrothermal mineral formation within volcanic environments.
