Tarbuttite Crystals on this miniature specimen form a dense, irregular aggregate composed of very fine, sparkling Crystals. The surface appears drusy to granular, with numerous small reflective points that clearly indicate a crystalline nature. Individual crystal faces are only microscopically developed, yet the overall crystal growth is unmistakable and typical for Tarbuttite from Kabwe. This specimen represents a characteristic collector example from this classic locality.
Geology & Origin
Tarbuttite is a rare zinc phosphate that forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zones of zinc deposits. The Broken Hill deposit at Kabwe, Zambia, is one of the most important localities worldwide for Tarbuttite. The mineral formed there under strongly oxidizing conditions and is commonly associated with other zinc minerals.
