This position comprises 100 g of staurolite 60° twins from Madagascar. The material shows the typical prismatic to tabular crystals of staurolite in brown to dark brown tones. Characteristic are the often clearly recognizable twin formations at an angle of approximately 60°, which make these specimens particularly illustrative and of interest to collectors. The pieces mainly occur as individual crystals or small groups and are well suited as reference and collection material for classic metamorphic minerals. Crystal size, habit, and development vary from piece to piece, giving the position a mineralogically diverse appearance.

Geology & Origin

Staurolite is an iron- and aluminum-bearing silicate mineral that forms under medium- to high-grade metamorphic conditions in metamorphic rocks such as mica schists. The Madagascan occurrences are known for well-developed staurolite crystals, which frequently display characteristic twin formations. These twins form during crystal growth under specific pressure and temperature conditions. Madagascar is regarded as a classic source of collectible staurolite and has supplied material of interest to both collectors and those interested in geological processes for many years.
