Spodumene (Kunzite); Nigeria; Cab; unique piece
Spodumene (Kunzite) from Nigeria – Cabinet specimen as unique piece
This Spodumene specimen in the variety Kunzite shows a delicate violet to pink coloration with a slightly translucent appearance. The elongated, tabular form is typical for Spodumene and is emphasized by fine parallel structures on the surface. With a length of approx. 13 cm, this is a larger cabinet specimen with a clearly recognizable crystalline structure. The surface appears matte to silky and shows natural fracture features.
Geology & origin
Spodumene is a lithium aluminum silicate with the chemical composition LiAlSi₂O₆ and belongs to the pyroxene group. The variety Kunzite gets its characteristic pink to violet color from traces of manganese. Spodumene forms in granitic pegmatites, where slow cooling allows the development of larger crystal individuals. Nigeria is a known source for pegmatite minerals and regularly produces Spodumene in various color variations.
