Spessartine, Feldspar xls; Dassu Valley, Pakistan; Gerd Tremmel collection; Min; unique piece
Spessartine and Feldspar crystals from the Dassu Valley, Pakistan, Gerd Tremmel collection – miniature specimen as unique piece
This attractive miniature specimen features several intensely red-brown Spessartine crystals in striking contrast on light, blocky Feldspar crystals. The Spessartine shows a strong dark red to wine-red color with vitreous luster. Its well-developed, sharp crystal faces reflect the light vividly and clearly display the typical, slightly complex crystal morphology.
The white to cream-colored Feldspar forms a stable and aesthetically pleasing matrix with clearly visible tabular crystals. The strong color contrast between the dark Spessartine crystals and the bright Feldspar gives the piece a particularly harmonious and collectible overall appearance. The crystals are well exposed and distinctly developed.
Geology & Origin
The Dassu Valley in Pakistan is internationally renowned for its alpine-type pegmatites, which produce a wide variety of high-quality crystal specimens. Spessartine, a manganese-rich garnet, crystallizes in cavities of pegmatitic veins, commonly in association with Feldspar, Quartz and other pegmatite minerals.
The intense red coloration of Spessartine is caused by its manganese content. Under hydrothermal conditions within the pegmatites of the Dassu Valley, well-formed and often free-standing crystals develop, highly valued worldwide for their quality and color intensity.
