Smoky Quartz crystals from Mt. Malosa, Zomba, Malawi – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This attractive specimen from the well known Mt. Malosa locality in Malawi displays numerous Smoky Quartz crystals with transparent to smoky brown coloration on feldspar rich matrix. The crystals are clearly developed and show partly sharp terminal faces with natural vitreous luster. Especially decorative is the contrast between the dark Smoky Quartz crystals, the salmon colored feldspar crystals and the dark associated minerals on the matrix. The crystals create an aesthetically pleasing three dimensional structure with strong visual presence. Several crystals are freely exposed and give the specimen the characteristic appearance of high quality Malosa pegmatite mineralization.

Geology & Origin

Mt. Malosa near Zomba in Malawi is one of the world’s best known localities for rare pegmatite and alkaline rock minerals. The region is especially famous for aesthetic combinations of Smoky Quartz, Aegirine and feldspar. These minerals formed in hydrothermally influenced pegmatitic zones within complex alkaline intrusions. Slow crystal growth allowed the formation of well developed crystals that are highly appreciated by mineral collectors worldwide.
