Smoky Quartz and Microcline crystals from Mt. Malosa, Zomba, Malawi – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This aesthetic specimen from the famous Mt. Malosa area in Malawi displays numerous Smoky Quartz and Microcline crystals in attractive combination on compact matrix. The Smoky Quartz crystals show smoky brown to grayish brown transparency with distinct vitreous luster and well developed crystal faces. Particularly striking are the contrasting Microcline crystals with their light colored partly blocky habit, creating an appealing visual contrast to the darker Smoky Quartz crystals. The crystals are clearly developed and create a richly structured three dimensional appearance with classic pegmatite character.

Geology & Origin

Mt. Malosa near Zomba in Malawi is one of the best known localities for rare pegmatite minerals associated with alkaline intrusive rocks. The region is especially famous for combinations of Smoky Quartz, Microcline, Aegirine and other rare minerals. These minerals formed in complex pegmatitic and hydrothermally influenced zones within the Malosa massif. Slow crystallization allowed the formation of exceptionally well developed crystals with pronounced forms and attractive intergrowths that are highly appreciated by collectors worldwide.
