Siderite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia, Ilse Baer collection – micromount as unique piece
This micromount specimen with Siderite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia, originates from the Ilse Baer collection and was collected before 1972. The Siderite crystals display an attractive honey brown to reddish brown coloration with strong vitreous luster. Several well formed crystals are grouped closely together, producing vivid light reflections and locally iridescent color effects from their faceted surfaces.
The compact crystal group is aesthetically appealing due to the combination of warm color tones, transparent to translucent crystal development and the contrasting darker matrix.
Geology & Origin
Siderite is an iron carbonate that commonly forms in hydrothermal deposits and carbonate rich ore systems. In the Tsumeb Mine, Siderite occurs in various mineral assemblages together with many other minerals of the complex polymetallic deposit. The exceptional geochemical diversity of this deposit favored the formation of numerous well developed crystals of different mineral species.
This table is for general information and orientation, although the sizes of the stones may vary. In addition, this specification is handled differently from region to region.
