This exceptionally heavy unique flat, with a total weight of more than 7 kg, contains numerous specimens of different sizes with Shattuckite, Chrysocolla and Brochantite from the Mesopotamia Mine near Khorixas in Namibia. The specimens display intense blue to turquoise and green copper mineralization on brown, grey and locally light-colored matrix. Particularly noticeable are broad coatings, vein-like areas, cavities and locally well-developed Brochantite crystals. The combination of several large specimens with smaller accompanying pieces makes this a substantial and visually varied assemblage.
Geology & Origin
The Mesopotamia Mine near Khorixas in Namibia is a locality for various secondary copper minerals formed within the oxidation zone of copper-bearing ores. Weathering and chemical alteration of primary copper minerals allowed minerals such as Shattuckite, Chrysocolla and Brochantite to develop. Shattuckite is a copper silicate typically showing blue to turquoise-blue coloration, while Chrysocolla is a hydrous copper silicate that commonly forms blue-green to green coatings and massive areas. Brochantite is a copper sulfate and may occur as distinct green crystals. The different mineral formations within the deposit reflect changing chemical conditions during oxidation and account for the wide variety of colors, textures and mineral associations found in these Namibian copper deposits.
