Scorodite crystals from the Hilarion Mine, Laurion, Greece – small cabinet specimen as unique piece
This small cabinet specimen features Scorodite from the Hilarion Mine in the Laurion district of Greece. Greenish to pale olive Scorodite formations cover parts of the dark matrix and form dull to fine crystalline aggregates with a strong color contrast against the rusty brown oxidation zones. The mineralization appears partly massive and compact, while some areas show delicate crystalline structures. The combination of earthy iron oxide colors and the characteristic green Scorodite areas gives the specimen a classic appearance typical of oxidized arsenic deposits from Laurion.
Geology & origin
The Hilarion Mine belongs to the historic mining operations of the Laurion district in Greece, a world famous locality for rare secondary minerals. Scorodite formed there as a secondary iron arsenate through the alteration of arsenic rich primary ores under oxidizing conditions. The complex geology of the Laurion area with its polymetallic ore veins led to the formation of numerous unusual mineral species that are highly appreciated today by collectors of classic and historic localities.
