Schlossmacherite and Ceruleite from Taltal, Chile – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen features Schlossmacherite and Ceruleite from Taltal, Chile. The surface of the matrix is covered with numerous intense blue green to sky blue mineralizations that create an attractive contrast against the olive green to brownish host rock. The minerals occur mainly as fine crystalline to earthy aggregates. Individual crystals are not clearly developed, but the vivid distribution of the mineralization is highly decorative and typical for secondary copper arsenates from oxidized deposits.

Geology & origin

The Taltal region in the Atacama Desert of Chile is well known for its diverse copper deposits and the formation of rare secondary arsenate minerals. Schlossmacherite and Ceruleite form in the oxidation zones of copper rich ore veins through the alteration of primary sulfide minerals. The extremely dry climate of the Atacama favors the preservation of delicate mineral formations and often produces exceptionally colorful collector specimens from the historic mining districts of northern Chile.
