Richelsdorfite crystals from Bauhaus, Richelsdorf, Hesse, Germany – small cabinet specimen as unique piece
This small cabinet specimen features Richelsdorfite from Bauhaus near Richelsdorf in Hesse, Germany. The intense blue green to turquoise mineralizations stand out strongly against the light gray to beige colored matrix and give the specimen a highly decorative appearance. The Richelsdorfite occurs mainly as fine crystalline to powdery aggregates, with the vivid color zones being especially striking. Individual crystals are not clearly developed, but the characteristic coloration of this rare copper arsenate is exceptionally well displayed.
Geology & origin
The Richelsdorf mining district in Hesse belongs to the classic German copper ore regions and is well known for its large variety of secondary copper and arsenic minerals. Richelsdorfite was first described there and received its name from the locality. The mineral formed in the oxidation zones of copper bearing deposits through the alteration of primary sulfide minerals. The historic mines around Richelsdorf produced numerous rare mineral species and remain highly appreciated among collectors of classic German localities.
