Richellite from Richelle, Liège, Belgium – 1 Half Size Flat, Sample

This half size flat contains very rich Richellite material from the type locality at Richelle near Visé in Liège Province, Belgium. The specimens predominantly show yellowish-brown to ochre, partly earthy and crusty areas with the characteristic appearance of Richellite. The material may also be associated with additional, partly rare phosphate minerals. Richellite from this classic locality is difficult to obtain today. The picture shows a sample of the offered flat.

Geology & Origin

Richellite is a calcium- and iron-bearing phosphate mineral and was first described from Richelle, making this locality its type locality. It occurs there in phosphatic sedimentary rocks and mineralized cavities within limestone. Richelle is mineralogically important because numerous phosphate minerals are known from this locality.
