Rhodizite crystal from Mount Ibity, Antsirabe, Madagascar – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen features a Rhodizite crystal from Mt. Ibity near Antsirabe, Madagascar. The pale to slightly yellowish crystal is embedded within a massive feldspar rich matrix showing gray and brownish areas. The Rhodizite crystal is clearly recognizable and displays typical compact crystal faces with a slightly vitreous luster. The combination of the light colored matrix and the embedded crystal areas gives the specimen a natural and mineralogically attractive appearance. The crystal is small but clearly identifiable.

Geology & origin

Mt. Ibity near Antsirabe in Madagascar is regarded as one of the world’s best known localities for Rhodizite. The mineral forms in complex granitic pegmatites enriched in rare elements such as boron, lithium, and cesium. Rhodizite belongs to the rare borate minerals and commonly occurs together with feldspar, quartz, and other pegmatite minerals. Madagascar’s pegmatite deposits are internationally famous for their diversity of rare mineral species and well formed crystals and have long been considered an important source for collector minerals.
