This lot contains numerous matrix specimens with well-visible pyrite crystals showing octahedral to cubic habits. Particularly striking are several twinned formations of the "Iron Cross" type, which are typical for the locality of Extertal in North Rhine-Westphalia. The pyrite crystals display a brownish-golden to matte surface due to natural oxidation processes but are mostly well-preserved and in some cases sharply developed.

Geology & Origin

The Iron Cross twins from Extertal are classic collector’s specimens from northwestern Germany. They form through specific penetration twinning of cubic pyrite along {111} planes. The matrix is typically composed of clay-rich to sandy rock in which the crystals are embedded. Such pieces often originate from historical quarries or temporary exposures and are difficult to access today.
