Pyrite on Slickensides; Oberscheld Quarry, Lahn Dill Area, Germany; Min; unique piece
Pyrite on Slickensides from Oberscheld Quarry, Lahn Dill Area, Germany – miniature specimen as unique piece
This interesting specimen features Pyrite on distinctive slickenside surfaces from the Oberscheld Quarry in the Lahn-Dill mining district of Germany. The golden metallic Pyrite areas contrast beautifully with the dark matrix and occur directly on the smooth fault-polished surfaces. The characteristic striations of the slickensides are clearly visible, adding geological interest alongside the mineralogical appeal. The combination of Pyrite mineralization and structurally significant rock surfaces makes this specimen particularly attractive for collectors.
Geology & Origin
Pyrite (FeS₂) is one of the most common sulfide minerals and forms in a wide variety of geological environments. The slickenside surfaces from Oberscheld Quarry developed through movement along fault zones, where opposing rock surfaces polished each other and produced characteristic linear striations. Hydrothermal minerals such as Pyrite later crystallized on these surfaces. The Lahn-Dill district is one of Germany’s most important historic mining regions and is well known for its diverse iron and sulfide mineral occurrences.
