Prehnite xls; Rauschermühle Quarry, Niederkirchen, Germany; Gerd Tremmel collection; Scab; unique piece
Prehnite crystals from the Rauschermühle Quarry, Niederkirchen, Germany, Gerd Tremmel collection – small cabinet specimen as unique piece
This attractive small cabinet specimen displays several rounded, botryoidal aggregates of light green Prehnite on matrix. The crystals form typical spherical to hemispherical rosettes with a finely crystalline surface. On closer inspection, individual crystal faces are clearly visible, giving the aggregates a silky to slightly vitreous luster.
Colorless to slightly translucent tabular crystals occur as associates, creating an appealing contrast to the soft green tones of the Prehnite. The crystals are well developed and aesthetically distributed, resulting in a harmonious overall appearance. A classic collector’s specimen from a well-known German locality.
Geology & Origin
The Rauschermühle Quarry near Niederkirchen in Rhineland-Palatinate is known for alpine-type cavities in volcanic rocks. Prehnite forms there as a secondary mineral in cavities and fractures, commonly in association with zeolites and other low-temperature hydrothermal minerals.
The botryoidal to spherical Prehnite crystals develop through slow crystallization from mineral-rich solutions at relatively low temperatures. Specimens from Rauschermühle are highly appreciated among collectors of regional German minerals due to their characteristic crystal habit and quality.
This table is for general information and orientation, although the sizes of the stones may vary. In addition, this specification is handled differently from region to region.
