Posnjakite crystals from Lautenthal, Harz, Germany – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This interesting specimen displays Posnjakite on a dark, strongly weathered matrix from the historic mining district of Lautenthal in the Harz Mountains. Blue-green Posnjakite crystals and crystalline coatings are visible in several cavities and along fractures, creating an attractive contrast with the brown to dark grey host rock. The crystals occur as fine aggregates and give the specimen a lively appearance. Numerous cavities and weathering structures further emphasize the character of this rare copper mineralization.

Geology & Origin

Posnjakite is a rare hydrated copper sulfate hydroxide that forms as a secondary mineral within the oxidation zone of copper-bearing ore deposits. It develops through the alteration of primary copper minerals under the influence of oxygen-rich solutions. Lautenthal in the Upper Harz is one of Germany's classic mining regions, known for its long mining history and remarkable diversity of secondary copper minerals. Specimens from this locality are highly valued by collectors for both their historical significance and mineralogical diversity.
