Phosgenite crystals from Monteponi, Sardinia, Italy – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This interesting small cabinet specimen displays dark gray to nearly black Phosgenite crystals on compact matrix. Several of the crystals are clearly visible and show the typical resinous to slightly metallic luster characteristic of Phosgenite. The surface appears richly textured with embedded crystal areas creating an attractive depth effect. The crystals are distinctly developed and highly collectible for the classic Monteponi locality.

Geology & Origin

Phosgenite is a rare lead chlorocarbonate mineral that usually forms in the oxidation zones of lead bearing deposits. The historic deposits of Monteponi in Sardinia are among the most famous classic mineral localities in Italy and produced numerous rare lead and secondary minerals. Specimens with recognizable Phosgenite crystals from Monteponi are considerably rarer on today’s market and especially appreciated by collectors of classic European localities.
