Pericline crystals from Ofenhorn, Binntal, Switzerland – cabinet specimen as unique piece
This attractive cabinet specimen displays several well-developed Pericline crystals on a light-colored matrix from the famous Binntal locality. The colorless to slightly transparent crystals show the typical tabular to blocky habit characteristic of Pericline and are prominently exposed on the matrix. The larger crystal group in the lower part of the specimen stands out clearly from the surrounding rock and gives the piece an appealing three-dimensional appearance. The well-formed crystals and classic locality make this specimen a desirable addition to collections of Alpine minerals.
Geology & Origin
Pericline is a variety of the feldspar mineral Albite and is one of the characteristic minerals of Alpine fissure environments. The Binntal region in the Swiss canton of Valais is among Europe's most important mineral localities and is internationally renowned for its remarkable diversity of rare mineral species. Around Ofenhorn, mineral-rich fissures formed during Alpine mountain-building processes, providing ideal conditions for crystal growth. For many decades, the area has enjoyed an outstanding reputation among mineral collectors worldwide.
