Pecoraite, Idrialite and Cinnabar; Culver Baer Mine, California, USA; 1 flat; unique
Pecorite, Idrialite and Cinnabar from the Culver Baer Mine, California, USA – 1 unique flat
This rare collection features translucent red Cinnabar accompanied by dark Pecorite zones and needle-like coatings of Idrialite – an organic compound belonging to the polycyclic aromatic group. All specimens originate from the Culver Baer Mine in California and display an unusually dense association of these rare accessory minerals. The strong contrast between the vivid cinnabar red and the dark Pecorite highlights gives these pieces a distinctive aesthetic appeal. Each sample is housed in a labeled specimen box with visible mineral identification.
Geology & origin
The Culver Baer Mine is located in northern California (USA) and was historically known for mercury extraction. In this hydrothermal deposit, Cinnabar is accompanied by various sulfide or organic accessory minerals. Pecorite is a rare Ni-Mg silicate typically found in ultramafic rocks. Idrialite forms through sublimation from mercury vapors in fumaroles or fractures and is often found in association with Cinnabar.
