Orpiment from the Getchell Mine, NV, USA – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen originates from the famous Getchell Mine in Nevada, USA, a world renowned locality for arsenic bearing minerals. The specimen displays Orpiment with its characteristic golden yellow to orange yellow coloration on dark matrix. The mineralized areas create an attractive color contrast and clearly show the typical appearance of this rare arsenic sulfide mineral. No distinct crystals are developed on this specimen, and the mineral occurs mainly as massive to fine grained aggregates.

Geology & Origin

Orpiment is an arsenic sulfide mineral with the chemical formula As₂S₃. It typically forms in low temperature hydrothermal deposits and is commonly associated with Realgar, Arsenopyrite and other arsenic bearing minerals. The Getchell Mine is one of Nevada's most important gold deposits and is also known for numerous rare arsenic minerals. Specimens from this classic locality are highly valued by mineral collectors because of their mineralogical significance.
