Mint Opal, green; Sulawesi, Indonesia – 100 g
This hand-picked 100 g lot features naturally formed mint opal with a soft, translucent mint to aqua-green color. The pieces originate from secondary siliceous deposits on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and develop a more intense mint-green hue when moistened – a characteristic feature of this variety. Surfaces are mostly matte to slightly glossy, sometimes with remnants of the light host rock attached.
This mint opal is ideal as rough material for collectors, for microscopic examination, or for lapidary use. Its subtle, natural coloring makes it a sought-after material among those who appreciate rare opal varieties from lesser-known localities.
Geology & Origin
Mint opal is an amorphous, hydrated silica (SiO₂·nH₂O) that forms through the precipitation of silica-rich fluids. In the geologically active zones of Sulawesi, such opals typically occur in association with clay-rich volcanic rocks, where silica accumulates in open structural zones. The typical mint-green color is likely influenced by trace elements such as nickel, though it is non-fluorescent.
Indonesia is known for its opal-bearing rocks, particularly on Java and Sulawesi. Mint opal is among the rarer varieties found in the region, valued for its calm color tones and good polishing properties. Localities like this are increasingly appreciated by collectors due to their attractive rough material and unique color character.
