This Opal from Ethiopia measures approx. 4.5 × 3 mm and displays a play of color with changing green, blue, and orange tones. The top enhances the natural brilliance of the stone and allows light to move across the surface in dynamic reflections. This characteristic iridescence is typical for Opal and varies depending on the angle of light. The underside of the stone is flat and not rounded, making it especially suitable for further use in jewelry settings. The combination of strong color play and precise cutting gives this small gemstone a very attractive appearance.
Geology & origin
Opal is an amorphous form of silica and does not belong to the crystalline minerals. Its characteristic play of color is caused by the diffraction of light within its fine internal structure. Ethiopia is one of the important sources of Opal and is especially known for specimens with intense and diverse color effects. The deposits there often produce stones with vivid color play and good transparency. This specimen shows the typical properties of Ethiopian Opal in cut form.
Application note
The stone is suitable, among other things, for jewelry making such as rings, pendants, or earrings, as well as for gemstone collectors. Due to its flat underside it is particularly suited for settings requiring a level base. Opal is sensitive to strong temperature changes and mechanical stress, therefore it should be handled with care. For cleaning, a soft cloth is recommended; aggressive cleaning agents or ultrasonic cleaning should be avoided.
