Opal from Ethiopia. approx. 3–4 mm – 1 piece
Opal with vivid play of color showing intense green, yellow to orange light reflections. The smoothly polished surface beautifully highlights the typical opalescence and gives the stone a lively and shimmering appearance. Due to the natural flashes of color and the compact shape, these specimens are especially suitable for delicate jewelry work or mineral collections.
Geology & origin
Opal is a hydrous silicon dioxide mineral that forms in cavities and fractures of various rocks. The characteristic play of color is caused by the diffraction of light within microscopic silica structures inside the material. Ethiopia is today one of the world’s most important sources of precious opal and produces especially colorful specimens with bright flashes in various shades. The offered pieces display the typical characteristics of polished Ethiopian precious opals.
Application note
The stone is suitable for jewelry creations such as rings, pendants, or inlay work as well as for mineral collections. Since opal may contain water and can react sensitively to strong temperature changes, the material should be protected from prolonged direct sunlight and excessive heat.
