Mahogany Obsidian from Armenia – One cabinet specimen as unique piece

This distinctive Mahogany Obsidian cabinet specimen weighs approximately 355 g and displays a particularly striking pattern of vivid reddish-brown to orange-brown areas combined with deep black bands. The closely spaced, flowing structures extend throughout the specimen and are especially visible across its smooth, glassy fracture surfaces. The characteristic conchoidal fracture of Obsidian creates defined edges and curved surfaces that reveal different aspects of the natural pattern when viewed from changing angles.

Geology & Locality

Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools so rapidly that crystals have little or no time to develop. Its mahogany-brown colour and banding are mainly caused by finely distributed iron oxides and other mineral inclusions within the black volcanic glass. Armenia has a strongly volcanic landscape and is known for numerous Obsidian occurrences producing material with varied colours and distinctive patterns.

Application note

This piece is especially suitable for collectors and for decorative display. Due to its natural structure, it should be handled with care and stored in a dry environment to preserve the surface over time.
