Thomsonite crystals from Gila River, New Mexico, USA, Gerd Tremmel collection –  miniature specimen as unique piece

This miniature specimen shows Thomsonite crystals from the Gila River area, New Mexico, USA, from the Gerd Tremmel collection. Several rounded, white to delicately cream colored Thomsonite crystals are situated within an open cavity on a dark gray to brownish volcanic matrix. The spherical aggregates stand out three dimensionally from the light, finely structured interior surface and create a clear contrast to the surrounding rock. The combination of compact basalt matrix and bright spherical crystal forms results in a balanced and clearly structured overall appearance.

Geology & Origin

The Gila River area in New Mexico is characterized by extensive basaltic volcanic rocks in which numerous gas bubbles and cavities developed. Thomsonite formed here secondarily as a zeolite mineral through the circulation of mineral rich solutions at low temperatures within these cavities. The development of spherical crystal aggregates is characteristic of zeolite bearing basalts of this region and reflects gradual crystallization under hydrothermal conditions.
