Natrolite crystals from Roth, Westerwald, Germany, Gerd Tremmel collection – miniature specimen as unique piece
This miniature specimen shows Natrolite crystals from Roth, Westerwald, Germany, from the Gerd Tremmel collection. Several spherical aggregates of fine, acicular Natrolite crystals are developed on a darker matrix and radiate outward in dense clusters. The crystals form snow white to slightly translucent rosettes with silky to vitreous luster. The radially arranged needles are clearly developed and give the specimen an elegant, almost flower like appearance. The crystals appear fresh and contrast impressively with the darker host rock.
Geology & Origin
Natrolite is a sodium aluminum silicate belonging to the zeolite group and forms secondarily in cavities of volcanic rocks. In the Westerwald region it typically occurs in basalts where it precipitates from hydrothermal solutions within gas bubbles and fractures. The Roth locality is one of the classic German zeolite occurrences and is known for well developed radiating fibrous Natrolite crystals. The aggregates shown here illustrate the typical formation of this mineral in basaltic host rocks.
