Mimetesite crystals from the Tiny Arenas Mine, Sardinia, Italy, Gerd Tremmel collection – cabinet specimen as unique piece

This cabinet specimen with Mimetesite crystals from the Tiny Arenas Mine, Sardinia, Italy, originates from the Gerd Tremmel collection and represents a particularly colorful example of this classic lead arsenate. The Mimetesite crystals occur as numerous intensely yellow to yellow green crystals densely covering the surface of the matrix.

The crystals are well developed and show a clearly recognizable prismatic to slightly barrel shaped morphology with lustrous crystal faces. They form dense crystal coatings across the reddish brown, iron rich matrix. The strong color contrast between the bright Mimetesite crystals and the darker host rock gives the specimen an exceptionally decorative appearance.

Geology & Origin

The Tiny Arenas Mine in Sardinia is a well known locality for secondary lead and arsenate minerals. The mineralization formed in the oxidation zone of a lead rich ore body where weathering processes produced minerals such as Mimetesite. The locality is characterized by intensely colored, well developed crystals that often occur as coatings on iron rich matrix, making it a classic European source for Mimetesite.
