This small cabinet specimen shows Meta-Torbernite crystals from Musonoi in the Congo, from the Gerd Tremmel collection. The vivid green crystal aggregates cover large parts of the surface and contrast strongly with the darker, locally yellowish altered areas of the matrix. The irregular distribution and intense coloration give the specimen a distinctive appearance that is characteristic of secondary uranium mineralization from this region.
Geology & origin
Meta-Torbernite is a secondary uranium mineral formed by dehydration of Torbernite within the oxidation zones of copper-uranium deposits. It typically occurs as fine-crystalline to crusty coatings and aggregates. The Musonoi deposit is located within the Central African Copperbelt and is regarded as a classic locality for uranium and copper minerals, known for its exceptional mineralogical diversity and global relevance.
