Malachite crystals from Katanga, Congo, Gerd Tremmel collection – Scab as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen features Malachite from the Katanga region, Congo, from the Gerd Tremmel collection. The specimen displays an intense green color range, varying from deep emerald to lighter, slightly bluish green tones. The surface is irregular and richly textured, showing knobby to crusty areas that are locally interspersed with lighter, contrasting mineral zones. The strong coloration combined with the complex surface structure gives the specimen a very expressive and characteristic appearance typical for Malachite from this classic copper district.

Geology & origin

Malachite is a secondary copper carbonate that forms in the oxidation zones of copper deposits. The deposits of the Katanga region are among the most important copper occurrences worldwide and are renowned for their wide variety of secondary copper minerals. Malachite forms here through the alteration of primary copper sulfides under the influence of oxygen- and carbonate-rich solutions. This specimen originates from the Gerd Tremmel collection and represents characteristic material from this world-famous locality.
