Aegirine crystal aus Malawi, Gerd Tremmel collection– small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen features Aegirine from Malawi, from the Gerd Tremmel collection. The specimen shows an elongated, distinctly prismatic overall shape with angular outlines and a metallic to vitreous luster on cleavage and fracture surfaces. The dark, almost black-green coloration is typical for Aegirine and is further emphasized by reflective surface areas. Overall, the specimen appears very characteristic and expressive for this mineral from alkaline rock environments.

Geology & origin

Aegirine is a sodium- and iron-rich clinopyroxene that typically forms in alkaline magmatic rocks such as nepheline syenites, phonolites, and carbonatites. Malawi is well known for such alkaline intrusions, where Aegirine occurs as a characteristic rock-forming or associated mineral. This specimen originates from the Gerd Tremmel collection and represents classic reference material for this mineral species.
