Crocidolite crystals from Wittenoom, Western Australia, Australia, Gerd Tremmel collection – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen shows Crocidolite crystals from Wittenoom, Western Australia, Australia, from the Gerd Tremmel collection. The specimen displays a striking banded inclusion of parallel arranged, clearly developed Crocidolite crystals within a reddish brown and dark matrix. The fibrous crystals are distinctly formed and exhibit a silky to slightly metallic luster. In cross section, the typical fine parallel structure characteristic of Crocidolite becomes visible. The crystals form a compact yet strongly textured zone with pronounced linear structure and impressive optical effect.

Geology & Origin

Crocidolite is a fibrous variety of the amphibole group and belongs mineralogically to the riebeckite series. It forms in iron rich silicate rocks and is especially well known from the banded iron formations of Western Australia. In the Wittenoom region, such fibrous amphiboles occur in stratabound zones formed by metamorphic processes. The present specimen documents this typical layered development with clearly oriented crystal growth.
