Crocidolite crystals from Wittenoom, Western Australia, Australia, Gerd Tremmel collection – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen shows Crocidolite crystals from Wittenoom, Western Australia, Australia, from the Gerd Tremmel collection. The specimen displays clearly recognizable, parallel fibrous Crocidolite crystals running in undulating layers through the rock. The bluish shimmering fiber bundles contrast impressively with the dark fine grained matrix and create a characteristic silky texture. The crystals are clearly developed and show the typical longitudinal fibrous structure of this mineral, giving the piece a distinctive banded appearance.

Geology & Origin

Crocidolite is the asbestiform variety of the amphibole Riebeckite and forms in metamorphosed banded iron formations. At Wittenoom it occurs within banded iron formations where it developed through regional metamorphism of iron and sodium rich precursor rocks. The parallel fibrous aggregates document directed crystallization under pressure and temperature conditions during metamorphism. Wittenoom is a globally known locality for Crocidolite in banded iron formations.
