Adamite and Smithsonite crystals from the Hilarion Mine, Lavrion, Greece – small cabinet specimen as unique piece
This unique specimen shows a dense coverage of the matrix with greenish adamite crystals occurring together with white to pale green smithsonite crystals. The crystals are small but clearly visible, forming a sparkling, multi-layered surface. Particularly attractive is the interplay of colors between the green adamite, the light smithsonite, and the contrasting brown matrix.
The specimen comes from the Hilarion Mine near Laurion in Greece, one of the classic European localities for zinc and lead minerals. Adamite is a zinc arsenate that crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, while smithsonite is a zinc carbonate occurring in the trigonal system. The association of these two minerals makes the piece both mineralogically significant and especially appealing in appearance.
