Native Bismuth from the Aufgeklärtes Glück Mine, Wernigerode, Harz, Germany – miniature specimen as unique piece

This miniature specimen features native Bismuth from the historic Aufgeklärtes Glück Mine near Wernigerode in the Harz Mountains, Germany. The specimen consists of massive silvery metallic native Bismuth embedded in a light colored matrix. Particularly striking are the typical granular to compact metallic areas with their slightly gray to tin white luster. In some places fine crystal surfaces and irregular intergrowths are visible, giving the specimen a natural and rugged appearance. Native Bismuth is considered one of the classic rarities from the Harz region and today is only rarely available from older collections.

Geology & origin

The Aufgeklärtes Glück Mine belongs to the historic ore mines of the Harz Mountains. The district around Wernigerode is known for complex hydrothermal ore veins with a great diversity of metallic minerals. Native Bismuth forms in such deposits under specific chemical conditions and usually occurs as compact or finely crystalline aggregates. Specimens from old Harz localities are highly appreciated among collectors of historic German minerals.
