Montroseite etc. from the Burro Mine, CO, USA – small cabinet specimen as unique piece
This interesting small cabinet specimen originates from the famous Burro Mine in Colorado and displays dark, velvety to dull Montroseite-rich areas on contrasting matrix. The specimen is dominated by massive black mineral aggregates which, together with blue-green secondary copper minerals, create an attractive color contrast. Distinct individual crystals are not clearly developed or distinguishable; instead, the mineralization forms compact to fine-grained aggregates with a characteristic texture. This gives the specimen the typical appearance associated with the complex vanadium deposits of the Burro Mine.
Geology & Origin
The Burro Mine in Montrose County, Colorado, is one of the classic vanadium and uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau. Montroseite is a rare vanadium oxide and an important primary mineral in many vanadium-bearing ore bodies. Weathering and oxidation processes within these deposits have produced numerous additional rare vanadium minerals that commonly occur together on specimens. The Burro Mine is particularly well known among collectors for its remarkable diversity of vanadium minerals and is regarded as one of the most significant localities for this mineral group in North America.
