Mixite xls (TOP!), Atelestite xls; Schmiedestollenhalde, Black Forest, Germany; Min; unique piece
Top Mixite crystals and Atelestite crystals from Schmiedestollenhalde, Black Forest, Germany – miniature specimen as unique piece
This attractive miniature specimen features vivid green Mixite crystals together with Atelestite on a light-colored matrix from the well-known Schmiedestollenhalde locality in Germany's Black Forest region. The intensely colored crystal aggregates immediately attract attention and create an excellent contrast against the pale host rock. Particularly striking are the clearly visible crystal coatings and tufted aggregates, which give the specimen strong visual appeal. The crystals are readily recognizable and make this piece a remarkable collector's specimen of this rare arsenate association.
Geology & Origin
Schmiedestollenhalde is one of the classic Black Forest localities for rare secondary copper and arsenate minerals. Mixite is a hydrated copper bismuth arsenate that commonly forms delicate acicular and radiating crystal aggregates. Atelestite, a rare bismuth arsenate, develops under similar conditions within the oxidation zones of arsenic-rich ore deposits. The association of both mineral species on a single specimen is especially desirable for collectors and reflects the complex geochemical processes responsible for the formation of this exceptional mineral assemblage.
