Melanotekite, Willemite xls; Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia; Gerd Tremmel collection; TN; unique piece
Melanotekite and Willemite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibi, Gerd Tremmel collection – micromount as unique piece
This micromount specimen with Melanotekite and Willemite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia, from the Gerd Tremmel collection shows small clearly recognizable crystals on a compact matrix. The darker crystals contrast with the lighter areas of the matrix and form a characteristic association of secondary mineralization typical for this famous deposit.
The combination of two rare mineral species together with the provenance from the well known Gerd Tremmel collection gives this micromount particular collector significance. Specimens from the Tsumeb Mine belong to the classic mineral pieces from one of the most important localities in the world for secondary mineral formations.
Geology & Origin
Melanotekite is a rare lead iron silicate that forms in the oxidation zone of complex polymetallic deposits. Willemite is a zinc silicate that also commonly occurs in the oxidized zone of the Tsumeb deposit. The unique geochemistry of the Tsumeb Mine produced an extraordinary diversity of rare mineral species, making this locality one of the most important classic mineral occurrences worldwide.
