Manganvesuvianite xls; N'Chwaning II Mine, Kalahari Manganese Field, South Africa; TN; unique piece
Manganvesuvianite crystals from the N'Chwaning II Mine, Kalahari Manganese Field, South Africa – small cabinet micromount as unique piece
This micromount specimen with Manganvesuvianite crystals from 2003 from the N'Chwaning II Mine, Kalahari Manganese Field, South Africa shows a particularly attractive development of this rare silicate mineral. The dark reddish brown to nearly black Manganvesuvianite crystals form dense, lustrous crystal groups with clearly defined, well developed crystal faces.
The crystals are prismatic to short columnar and are closely intergrown, creating a compact three dimensional structure. The intense luster and the dark, slightly reddish coloration give the specimen a strong aesthetic appeal. Such richly crystallized micromount specimens from the N'Chwaning mines are highly appreciated by collectors.
Geology & Origin
The N'Chwaning II Mine in the Kalahari Manganese Field is one of the most important localities worldwide for manganese minerals. The deposit formed in manganese rich sedimentary rocks that were later modified by metamorphic and hydrothermal processes. Within this geochemically unusual environment numerous rare manganese bearing silicate minerals developed, including Manganvesuvian, which occasionally forms well developed crystals at this locality.
