Löllingite crystals from Huancavelica, Peru – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen features metallic lustrous Löllingite crystals from Huancavelica, Peru. The surface is densely covered with fine to small prismatic crystals displaying a silvery gray to steel colored metallic luster. Especially striking is the richly textured crystal growth with numerous closely intergrown crystal aggregates, giving the specimen a vivid and sparkling appearance. The Löllingite crystals are clearly recognizable and create an attractive contrast with the darker areas of the matrix.

Geology & origin

Huancavelica in Peru is considered one of the classic historic ore districts of South America and is especially known for arsenic rich mineral assemblages. Löllingite is an iron arsenide typically forming in hydrothermal veins and high temperature ore deposits. The mineral commonly occurs together with arsenopyrite, pyrite, and other sulfide ore minerals. Characteristic are its metallic steel gray crystals and massive aggregates. Specimens from Huancavelica are appreciated by collectors because of their classic locality and often rich crystal development.
