Libethenite crystals from Villa Viciosa, Portugal– small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen exhibits deep green coatings and compact, lustrous surfaces of Libethenite on a reddish-brown host rock. The dense structure and subtle metallic sheen give the piece a striking texture. Under angled light, fine granular patterns become visible, typical of this secondary copper phosphate mineral. The strong color contrast and well-defined separation from the matrix make this a visually appealing specimen for collectors.

Geology & Origin

Libethenite (Cu₂PO₄OH) is a rare secondary phosphate mineral formed in the oxidation zone of copper deposits. It results from the alteration of primary copper minerals such as Chalcopyrite or Malachite under phosphate-rich conditions. Specimens from the Villa Viciosa area in Portugal are among the best-known European occurrences, notable for their intense green coloration and mineralogical stability.
