Libethenite crystals from the Tyrone Mine, Grant Co., New Mexico, USA –  miniature specimen as unique piece

Libethenite crystals from the Tyrone Mine, Grant County, New Mexico, USA, from the Gerd Tremmel collection. The vivid green to turquoise crystal aggregates partially cover a brown to rusty matrix and form fine-grained, locally crust-like crystal surfaces. Individual crystals are recognizable, though small in size, and give the specimen a lively surface texture. The strong color contrast between matrix and crystals makes this piece a typical and visually appealing example from this locality. As a miniature specimen, it is well suited for systematic phosphate collections and specialized collections of US localities.

Geology & Origin

Libethenite is a copper phosphate mineral that forms secondarily within the oxidation zone of copper deposits. The Tyrone Mine in New Mexico is a well-known porphyry copper deposit where a wide range of secondary copper minerals developed through weathering processes. At this locality, Libethenite typically occurs as fine crystalline aggregates on iron-rich matrix and represents a characteristic accessory mineral of the deposit.
