Libethenite crystals from Estremoz, Portugal, Gerd Tremmel collection –  small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen shows Libethenite crystals from Estremoz, Portugal, from the Gerd Tremmel collection. The surface is extensively covered with dense, finely developed Libethenite crystals displaying a rich dark green to blackish green color. The crystals are clearly developed and form a sparkling drusy coating with vivid vitreous luster. In some areas, more intense emerald green zones stand out, creating an attractive color contrast with the lighter matrix. The crystals give the specimen a striking and richly textured appearance with a well defined crystal surface.

Geology & Origin

Libethenite is a basic copper phosphate that forms secondarily in the oxidation zone of copper bearing deposits. It develops through the reaction of phosphate bearing solutions with primary copper ores. The Estremoz region is known for various copper and phosphate occurrences in which characteristic secondary minerals such as Libethenite precipitate in fractures and cavities. The crystals shown here illustrate typical formation processes within oxidized copper ore zones.
