This interesting small cabinet specimen features Larsenite associated with Zincite from the world-famous Sterling Hill deposit in New Jersey. The specimen is characterized by contrasting black, dark grey, and vivid orange to red areas that are typical of the complex zinc ore deposits of the region. The dark Larsenite aggregates stand out clearly against the colorful matrix. Crystalline structures are visible, although the crystals mainly occur in closely intergrown aggregates, giving the specimen an attractive and complex appearance.
Geology & Origin
Sterling Hill, together with Franklin, is one of the world's most important classic localities for rare zinc minerals. Larsenite is a rare lead zinc silicate that formed within the complex metamorphosed ore bodies of the deposit. Zincite, known for its characteristic red to orange coloration, is among the best-known minerals from Sterling Hill. The exceptional mineral diversity of the locality has made it one of the most important type localities for numerous rare mineral species, making specimens from this deposit highly sought after by collectors.
