Köttigite crystals from the Silbereckle Mine, Lahr, Black Forest, Germany – cabinet specimen as unique piece

This cabinet specimen displays impressively developed Köttigite crystals from the Silbereckle Mine near Lahr in the Black Forest, Germany. Dense, snow white to slightly silvery crystal coatings cover large parts of the surface and form a finely structured, needle like to fibrous texture with lively light reflections. The crystals are richly developed and give the specimen a distinct frost like appearance that contrasts beautifully with the brownish to grey matrix. The interplay between the bright crystal coverage and the darker host rock results in a well balanced and highly attractive overall presentation with strong collector appeal.

Geology & Origin

The Silbereckle Mine in the Black Forest is a classic locality for arsenate rich secondary minerals formed during the weathering of sulfide bearing ore veins. Köttigite crystallized here within the oxidation zone from zinc and arsenic rich solutions precipitating in fractures and cavities of the host rock. The locality is well known for its characteristic fine crystal coatings and represents one of the important German occurrences of this rare mineral.
